Common Mode Chokes are widely used in the field of electromagnetic interference suppression. The PL8201 series of common mode chokes are a family of components suitable both for high frequency applications and for applications operating at lower frequencies.

The electromagnetic interference suppression is essentially achieved by the series inductance of the coil which has the effect of preventing the flow of high levels of currents in either direction along the power line. The core of the PL8201 family is made out of an electromagnetic alloy, this alloy has the positive characteristics of good permeability at a wide range of frequencies and allowing for low power losses. The connection terminals of the choke are gold plated for reliable contact and are also solenoid wrapped for optimal high frequency performance.

The PL8201 series are designed to work in differential mode or common mode applications, and work to reduce noise by suppressing the current flow in either mode, thus preventing the interference from reaching other electrical equipment. In common mode applications, the coil is wound in sequence so that the current flow in either direction is proportionally reduced. In differential mode applications, the coil is often wound with double the number of turns in opposite directions, thus allowing the interference to be directed in one easy direction, away from the circuit.

The PL8201 series of common mode chokes also feature excellent attenuation characteristics in addition to superior EMI/RFI suppression performance. The attenuation levels range from 20 to 60 dB with the lower attenuation levels being achieved at lower frequencies. At higher frequencies, the attenuation levels increase significantly. The operating temperature limit for the PL8201 series of chokes is 175°F (79°C).

In summary, the PL8201 series of common mode chokes are an ideal choice for EMI/RFI suppression applications. The excellent attenuation characteristics and low power loss of the alloy core are further enhanced by the gold plated terminals and the solenoid wrapped connection terminals. The operating temperature limit of the choke is also adequate ensuring reliable performance in the most demanding of applications.
