Common mode chokes are designed to suppress conducted common-mode (CM) emission on a data line. They are usually placed close to the data line source which is usually a microcontroller or an interface device. The most commonly found common mode choke is known as the PL8210 common mode filter. The PL8210 is a very effective and versatile EMC component.
The PL8210 is a common mode choke that is designed to reduce differential mode emissions and couple in-band common mode noise from cables and other digital sources to a ground connection. It is suitable for use in electronic equipment such as test equipment, consumer electronics, wireless communication equipment, computers, and medical equipment.
The PL8210 is constructed as two separate winding windings that are wound on a spool or ferrite core. The windings form a symmetrical shell around the center of the choke, which acts as an inductive device. The two windings are connected in series, and the common-mode or CM noise passes through the device. The choke is designed to block out-of-band noise from entering the downstream circuits while allowing the in-band frequencies to pass through.
The working principle of the PL8210 is to offer a high-impedance path for CM noise, while allowing the desired signal frequencies to pass through unimpeded. The magnetic core of the PL8210 stores energy from the CM noise, which is then dissipated as heat due to the resistance of the windings. Thus, the energy is not transmitted down the cable and this minimizes the noise that is created.
In addition, the PL8210 can be used in a flyback or pulsed circuit to eliminate common mode line ringing. In this configuration, the device operates as a differential mode filter to limit transients on the data line while providing minimal impedance to the desired signal frequencies.
The PL8210 filter also reduces power line noise. Being a common mode filter, the PL8210 reduces the common mode noise on the power line by providing two isolated high impedance windings. The power line noise picked up by the windings is then attenuated by the inductance of the windings and acts as additional EMF protection.
The PL8210 is a versatile and effective solution for a wide range of EMC applications. It can be used for data line EMC, power line EMC, as well as for differential line ringing suppression. It is a cost-effective solution that can provide effective EMC for a variety of applications.
