Introduction

Ferrite Beads and Chips are a subcategory of integrated passive components that are frequently used to filter out high frequency noise from power supplies, data lines, RF signals, and audio lines. Commonly referred to as Ferrite Beads or Ferrites, these beads and chips essentially serve as resistors at high frequencies and low current levels, which provide a low- impedance path that diverts transient currents away. This type of component often finds a place in modern electronic devices due to its useful flexibility, efficient design, and reasonable costs.

PMC0603-101 Application Field and Working Principle

One such Ferrite Bead and Chip is the PMC0603-101. It is an unshielded 0603 size ferrite bead chip bead that is used for noise suppression in electronic applications involving power distribution circuits, data communication, automotive systems, and audio systems. It offers both EMI/RFI suppression in both common mode and normal mode, depending on the application.The PMC0603-101 is usually used in pairs, that is, one in the data line and one in the ground plane, in order to provide the suppression effect efficiently. This is because they act as either an open or closed circuit at different frequencies, depending on the load. When the load is low or nil, the PMC acts as an open circuit at high frequencies, thus suppressing the noise signals on the data line. When the load is high, it acts as a closed circuit and allows higher current levels to pass through without being suppressed.The working principle of the PMC0603-101 ferrite bead can be broken down into two main components; dielectric absorption and inductive reactance. Dielectric absorption occurs when alternating current passes through a dielectric material, such as a ferrite. During this process, the alternating current is attracted to and immobilized on the surface of the dielectric material, due to its natural polarizing effects. This phenomenon causes the current to be dissipated before it reaches its destination, creating an electrical noise dampening effect.Inductive reactance occurs when an alternating current passes through an inductor. In this case, the PMC0603-101 inductor has an inductance of 1.3nH, which causes the current to be weakened and retarded as it passes through. This weakens and slows down the current, providing an additional noise filtering effect.In summary, the PMC0603-101 is an effective and efficient noise suppressing ferrite bead chip. Its use in a pair, connected to both the data line and ground plane, ensures optimal performance and reliability in noise suppression.
