Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT)

Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are electric protection devices that protect electrical systems from lightening strikes and overvoltage transients. They have been designed to disconnect lightening or other transient signals that exceed their trigger voltage. GDT\'s are generally installed at the site of an incoming power line or other equipment that can be prone to lightening strikes.

PMT835004F GDT is a series of surge arrester produced by Peide company. It can be used in power networks with 240/415/450V AC systems, and it is mainly used to protect against fast, intermittently occurring overvoltage. This GDT can be divided into two types according to the shell design. One is a two-way symmetric GDT, and the other one is an asymmetrically designed GDT. For two-way symmetric GDT, the primary layer insulation won\'t deteriorate despite voltage polarity reversal, however, for asymmetrically designed GDT, the primary layer insulation would deteriorate when the voltage polarity reversal happened.

Working Principle

PMT835004F GDTs uses the two-electrode principle to provide electric protection. It\'s composed of a short-circuit tube known as the spark gap, which will triggers a spark when the voltage gets elevated to the threshold value. When the spark gap triggers, an electric discharge gets initiated, and the excess voltage is discharged along the spark plug. The electric energy created through this spark produces heat and a phenomenon known as a Cathode Fall-Off, which eliminates the primary potential gap. This in turn leads to the breakdown of charged ionized gas along the spark plug, and this discharges the voltage, thus limiting it. This process serves to mitigate potentially dangerous surges from entering into the circuit.

PMT835004F GDT also has a variable resistance layer, which provides a certain level of impedance to manage the current passing through the GDT. This impedance allows for the adjustment of the current so that it does not exceed the GDTs current carrying capability. This characteristic also helps to absorb energy from the effects of the strong transient high-frequency signals which may occur due to lightening strikes, thereby eliminating transmission damage.
