Working Principle
The PMT835006 gas discharge tube works by providing a spark gap in front of the devices. It consists of a sealed glass tube that is filled with a gas mixture, typically air, nitrogen and argon. When a surge or overload passes through the arrester, the voltage instantaneously develops a spark, which instantly ionizes the gas molecules and creates a highly conductive path. This path provides an outlet from the arrester outlet to ground, thus limiting the voltage on the system by diverting the surge away.
Once the spark has been created, the gas molecules quickly recombine and the arrester is no longer conductive. The amount of time during which the arrester is conducting is known as the spark cycle. The spark cycle is normally only a few hundred nanoseconds in duration but in larger surges, the spark cycle may be extended up to 1 microsecond or more.
