A PN4117 is an enhanced version of N-channel JFET (Junction Field Effect Transistor). It offers improved electrical performance as well as better reliability than its predecessors .
The PN4117 offers very low input capacitance, which is ideal for low frequency and audio applications. It also offers excellent distortion performance with very low input bias currents. In addition, its drain-source breakdown voltage is higher than that of traditional JFETs, which increases its usability in high voltage applications.
A PN4117 FET consists of five terminals - source, gate, drain, bulk and substrate. In operation, a positive voltage is applied to the gate terminal, which attracts the electrons in the valence band of the channel and closes the channel. This decreases the channel resistance between the source and drain, thereby reducing the drain-source voltage.
There are a number of application areas in which the PN4117 can be used. These include high voltage switching, voltage controlled attenuators, voltage controlled low pass filters, amplifier stages and low noise amplifiers. In high voltage switching applications, the PN4117 is used as an on/off switch, allowing signals to pass or be blocked depending on the voltage applied to the gate.
For voltage controlled attenuators, the PN4117 can be used to vary the gain of an amplifier by controlling the overall gain of the amplifier. In voltage controlled low pass filters, the PN4117 can be used to vary the cut-off frequency of the filter. It can also be used in audio applications to provide frequency-dependent gain control.
In amplifier stages, the PN4117 can be used to control the voltage gain of the stage, thereby providing a simple way to adjust the gain of the amplifier. In low noise amplifiers, the PN4117 can be used to reduce the noise of the signal, resulting in improved signal-to-noise ratio.
