Thyristors - TRIACs
A TRIAC (Triode for Alternating Current) is a three-terminal device that consists primarily of two semiconductor junctions. It is a thyristor, made up of two thyristors connected in an inverse parallel configuration. It can control either AC or DC current with the same control voltage and usually works in one or two quadrants. TRIACs are generally used for controlling and switching AC current in power electronics applications such as home appliances, electronic ballasts, power supplies, and motors.
Q2010N4RP Application Field and Working Principle
The Q2010N4RP is a four quadrant, gate turn-off thyristor (GTO) that is used in a variety of power electronics applications. It has among the highest ratings of any TRIAC, featuring 4A current and a TJmax of 150°C. The high current and temperature ratings make it suitable for a wide range of applications, including motor control, lighting control, low voltage control, and AC applications in general.
The operating principle of the Q2010N4RP is based on the switching of current using MOS gate technology. During the turn-on and turn-off transitions, a voltage is applied to the gate pin to induce a current flow and turn on or turn off the thyristor. During the turn-on transition, the voltage between gate and main terminal is above the threshold voltage, inducing a current flow which charges the gate capacitance and turns on the thyristor. During the turn-off transition, the voltage between the gate and main terminal is negative and current flow will decrease, resulting in the thyristor switching off.
The Q2010N4RP is a very reliable device with an inherent short circuit protection circuit and a maximum off-state voltage rating of 800V. The device has a wide range of capabilities due to its MOS controlled gate technology and high current and temperature ratings. This makes it an ideal solution for a wide range of applications such as motor control and lighting control.
