Q2012NH5TP Application Field and Working Principle
The Q2012NH5TP is a high power, medium- to high-voltage, three-terminal, triac (thyristor) device. It is suitable for a wide range of industrial, commercial, and residential applications and can be used as an ON/OFF switch in AC circuits as well as for bidirectional current control. The Q2012NH5TP is capable of handling both normally open and normally closed circuits. It is available in a variety of options such as surface mount, through-hole, or modular components.
The Q2012NH5TP utilizes a three-terminal system: gate, anode (main terminal, MT), and cathode (MT2). As a high-voltage triac, the Q2012NH5TP can handle up to 600 VAC or DC and switches or controls current up to 15 Amps. It is designed with a turn-on initiation voltage of 6V and a turn-off voltage of 2V. The device is able to switch over durations of 1ms to 10ms to 5ms after a turn-on pulse is applied. It is constructed of isolated monolithic epitaxy, featuring protection against junction temperature up to +175°C and isolation voltages of 4,000Vrms.
The application fields of the Q2012NH5TP include industrial and commercial light dimming, motor speed control, and power factor correction. It can also be utilized for home applications such as AC wall outlet control, lighting, automated equipment, lamp ballast and soft starting for motors. The Q2012NH5TP is ideal for direct control of AC and DC motors, fans, pumps, and lights.
Working Principle
The Q2012NH5TP utilizes the triac principle of power control. Triacs are essentially two SCRs (silicon-controlled rectifiers) connected in series and with the gate connected to the common terminal. When a positive voltage is applied to the gate, the device is turned on, allowing current to flow. The gate must remain at the higher voltage level in order to keep the device turned on. When the gate voltage falls, the device is turned off and current flow stops.
The working principle of the Q2012NH5TP is essentially the same as all other triacs. When a negative going voltage pulse is applied to the gate, the anode voltage begins to rise. When the anode voltage exceeds the turn-on voltage, the Q2012NH5TP will turn on and current begins to flow through the anode and the cathode. When the gate voltage is removed, the device will turn off.
The Q2012NH5TP is capable of bidirectional control, meaning that when the gate voltage is changed from positive to negative, the device will switch from off to on and from on to off. This bidirectional control makes it particularly desirable for applications such as motor speed control and light dimming.
