Thyristors are a type of transistor, unlike diodes, that can control the flow of current in either direction. TRIACs, also called "Triode Alternating Vacuum Tubes", work in a similar way as they can control and amplify electrical current in either direction. Q4004D4RP is an advanced surface mount D4RP TRIAC fabricated in a popular 3-pin SOT-89 (Vishay SOT-223) package, perfect for advanced lighting and power control applications in high-end industrial and commercial systems.
Q4004D4RP enables high power requirements up to 300V, at a maximum current rating of 4.0A for this device. It consists of two main terminals, a gate and a main terminal labeled MT1, with a third terminal labeled MT2 - used for triggering the device. When the gate terminal is a positive voltage, an electric current flowing between the MT1 and MT2 terminals can be triggered and turned on, with current then capable of flowing in either direction (depending on the gate voltage). This feature is known as bidirectional current control, and is the basis on which the operation of a TRIAC is based on. This TRIAC can trigger with positive or negative gate voltage, thus allowing symmetrical bidirectional control. The gate to MT2 terminal has an isolated threshold voltages, which helps the TRIAC to be triggered with a less than the trip voltage between MT1 and MT2.
Q4004D4RP provides excellent surge capability as well as low on-state impedance, allowing for efficient usage of power and application flexibility.
