THYRISTORS - TRIACs

Q4008LTH is a TRIAC, or a thyristor, which is a three terminal solid state switch used for controlling current. These can usually be found in devices such as dimmers for lights or speed controllers for fans. In many applications, these devices are used as a single way switch with their trigger leading wired to turn it either fully on or off. In more complex applications, they can also be used in pairs as bidirectional switches.

The TRIAC is made up of two sections, each comprising of two PNPN junction diodes, connected back-to-back. As current passes through the first diode, now known as the main terminal or MT1, it can be triggered to the on state by passing the current, which is referred to as the gate or G, through the second terminal, known as the gate terminal, GT.

This is an example of a TRIAC, the Q4008LTH, which is a type of semiconductor switch. It\'s an exceptionally useful device that has a wide range of voltage and current ratings, allowing them to turn on with minimum energy, settling quickly, and reaching an actual on current which is much lower than it\'s rating.

This TRIAC functions similarly to a two way switch; when the voltage across MT1 and MT2 become positive with respect to GT, a control voltage is applied to the gate terminal. The GT will now be triggered, causing current to be applied to the main terminals thus turning the switch on. The voltage at this point can vary depending on the application, but it is generally around 235V.

Furthermore, when the main terminals become negative with respect to the gate terminal, the TRIAC will turn off again. This can happen again and again, each time the voltage across the main terminals change with respect to the GT, producing a half-wave or full-wave output depending on the application.

The TRIAC is a great device, useful in many applications where current needs to be controlled or switched on and off quickly. It is also incredibly versatile, allowing it to be used in either single directional switches or in bidirectional pairs.
