Thyristors - TRIACs

The Q4016LH6 is a Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) or Thyristor under the family of TRIACs from ON Semiconductor. These devices are used for controlling the alternating current (AC) voltage by acting as a switch that is externally triggered. They are bi-directional and two Q4016LH6s are usually connected in inverse parallel to switch a load in both directions. TRIACs are one of the most common means of controlling a resistive load without disturbing the input AC voltage.

Application Fields

The Q4016LH6 Thyristor is used in numerous applications including speed control, motor control, lighting dimmers, and household appliances like TVs, mixes and food processors. It can be used in AC motor control drives like solenoid valves and vending machines to control the power supply. It is also used to adjust the temperature and the current of a circuit according to the input voltage.

Working Principle

The Q4016LH6 Thyristor works based on positive temperature coefficient and forward conduction features. It is triggered through gate terminal when the current flowing through Anode terminal and Cathode terminal increases. This happens as the resistance of PN-junction gets lower as the temperature of the device increases and it achieves forward conduction. When the gate current pulses are eliminated, the device goes back to its original condition.

When the Q4016LH6 is connected in reverse parallel conduction mode, then the gate current flip direction causes the two Thyristors to reach cut-off state. This is because the reverse current of one Thyristor is more than the forward current of two Thyristors and the two circuits are kept in balance.

This Thyristor has a blocking voltage of 400V, a fuse rating of 16A, and a holding current of 3A. It can be used for a variety of activates in AC power control conditions with symmetric and nonsymmetric load.
