A TRIAC, or triode for alternating current, is a solid-state device with three terminals attached, which can be used as a switch controlled by an input signal, much like a transistor controlling the flow of current. TRIACs are able to control high voltage, high current density circuits and therefore have a wide range of applications.

The Q401E3 is an available 4-amp 600VAC TRIAC with low gate current trigger and low VDRM. It has an IT(RMS) rating of 4A, VDRM/VRRM of 600V, and can handle gates current of 1mA typical. This TRIAC has a fast turn-off time of 500ns min.

Applications

Working Principle

The working principle of a TRIAC is based on a solid state three-terminal device which has the ability to control current in either direction. When forward voltage is applied to the gate, it causes the TRIAC to enter a non-conductive state, enabling it to control the current flow. When the voltage between two terminals is reversed, the TRIAC will become conducting again and it will conduct until either the applied voltage drops below a certain level or the bimetallic strip loses contact with the gate.

The Q401E3 operates at 800A peak current and 7mA trigger current with a trigger range of 4V to 8V. It has low VDRM/VRRM of 600V and low on-state resistance. The Q401E3 is designed to reduce power dissipation and decrease the switching time due to its narrow gate trigger limits. The device can switch alternatively between on and off state, enabling fast and efficient switching.
