Thyristors - TRIACs
The Q6006F52 is a TRIAC, a solid state semiconductor device also known as an alternating current (AC) switch. It is composed of two thyristor elements connected in an inverse parallel configuration, with a gate terminal controlling the triggering of both thyristors. This makes it unique from other AC switches, such as a relay, as it does not require a physical connection to open or close. Since the failure of a single thyristor does not result in the total failure of the TRIAC, it is also particularly suited for use in safety critical applications.
Application Fields
TRIACs, and the Q6006F52 in particular, have many uses. The most common application is as an AC switch in electric power control circuits. Working Principle
The Q6006F52 works like any other semiconductor switch, with the differences being its construction and that it is designed specifically for AC load control. The TRIAC consists of two thyristors connected together in an inverse-parallel configuration. When current is applied to either end of the load, current runs through the TRIAC, providing a path between the two thyristors. The gate control pin of the TRIAC allows the thyristors to be triggered simultaneously, allowing current to flow between both sides of the load.
The Q6006F52 works in two halves, called the ‘Main Leg’ and the ‘Grid Leg’. The Main Leg is the primary path for current through the device, and the Grid Leg controls the main leg. When a trigger signal is applied to the Gate Terminal of the TRIAC, the Grid Leg’s thyristor begins to conduct. This conducting current allows the Main Leg’s thyristor to become conducting as well, which closes the circuit and allows current to flow.
The TRIAC can be triggered in either direction, either opening or closing the circuit. Opening the circuit is accomplished by turning off the gate current and cutting off the supply to the Main Leg, while closing the circuit is accomplished by applying gate current and the supply to the Main Leg. The main current is controlled by varying the voltage and timing of the trigger signal on the Gate terminal, allowing for very precise control of the device.
