When in the on state, the current flowing is controlled by the amplitude of the MT2 voltage, which is called latching current; when the MT2 voltage goes above the latching current, the TRIAC turns on. On the other hand, when in the off state, the threshold voltage of the TRIAC controls the current flowing, which is called holding current.
