Thyristors - TRIACs are wildly used in today\'s society, with a wide range of applications, ranging from household appliances to industrial power supplies. Among them, the Q6008R5 is a high-performance 6A / 600V bidirectional thyristor, which is widely used in various power control applications. Today we will discuss its application field and working principle.

Application fields

The Q6008R5 can be used in a wide range of applications. Power semiconductor devices with such features are usually the first choice for high current applications such as motor control, lighting dimming control and automation system controls. Other typical applications for Q6008R5 include a broad range of AC and DC power controllers, high power converters and speed controllers. Comparatively, the Q6008R5 also has excellent temperature dependence and high surge current capabilities, making it ideal for applications in harsh environments.

Working Principle

The Q6008R5 is a bidirectional device and its fundamental structure consists of two thyristors (emitter and collector) connected in series. Hence, it should correctly be referred to as a bidirectional thyristor. The TRIAC is a type of controlled rectifier with two transistors, wherein both the transistors are thyristors and thus, it\'s inherently bidirectional in nature. Typically, the Q6008R5 comprises two pairs of main electrodes, an anode and a gate, with two additional terminals on each thyristor.

The most common working function of the Q6008R5 involves two AC power line cycles T1 and T2. The Mains Voltage, the Vmains, is applied between the anode and the gate and the current is passed through the device. The current flow is then controlled by triggering the Q6008R5 by voltages supplied to the gate terminal, thus controllng the firing angle. When the voltage at the gate is below a certain threshold,the current flow is blocked, thus reinforcing the shut-off capabilities of the device and increasing its protection against electrical overloading.

The threshold voltage between the anode and gate influence the maximum current that can flow through the Q6008R5, which means that its maximum current is dependent on the maximum voltage, the Vmax, of the AC Power Line cycle. The maximum turn-on current of Q6008R5 is determined by the breakdown voltage of the thyristor. Generally, Q6008R5 can carry up to 6A in normal applications and as much as 70A in surge current load.

In summary, the Q6008R5 offers superior control over AC current, superior temperature control and surge current capabilities, making it the perfect solution for a wide range of applications. It offers high current applications with enhanced protection against over voltage due to its two-stage receiving.
