A Triac (or TRIAC, affixed for Triode for Alternating Current) is a 3-terminal semiconductor component, applicable mostly as a digital switch, which divides in two independent thyristors that are arranged in such a way that they can control current in two directions, allowing to control devices capable of alternating current, or AC. This type of component is considered to be the final triode model, as the name implies.

After the gate current reaches a certain level, it will trigger, making the load current flow through the anode, known as the “on” state. After this, the current will flow continuously without any further current being applied to the gate. However, if the current going through the anode reaches a certain point, then the Triac will switch off, or go back to the “off” state. Due to the bidirectional nature of the Triac, it can control the current in both directions, meaning that the current is able to flow both ways, either on or off. This makes it a suitable component for use with AC loads such as motors, lights and transformers, amongst others.

As for electric shock protection, the Q6016LH3 has integrated overvoltage protection as a design element, meaning that in case of an overvoltage, the device will not let the potential leak down, preventing the user from any electric shock.
