QK008VH4TP Application Field and Working Principle
Thyristors, also known as TRIACs (Triode for Alternating Currents) are a form of silicon controlled rectifier, developed originally to facilitate the control of alternating current in applications such as household appliances. A TRIAC is a three-terminal, three-junction semiconductor device that acts as a switch, primarily intended to act as an alternative to the mechanical contactor switches used previously in our households. A TRIAC is capable of allowing current flow in both directions of the applied load, and is activated by a single gate terminal. This makes it especially convenient for controlling AC circuits and power supplies.
The QK008VH4TP is a high-performance, low-pressure, small-size, low-cost and low-power TRIAC from Vishay Intertechnology. It is composed of three layers; an anode (commonly referred to as the “hot” side of the device) and two cathodes, labeled “MT1” and “MT2”. Unlike its predecessor, the SCR (silicon controlled rectifier), the TRIAC has the capability of being automatically turned on in both directions when needed. One of the main features of the QK008VH4TP is its high threshold voltage of less than 0.2V, making it particularly ideal for controlling small-size, low-power circuits.

When the anode gate voltage is equal to or greater than the QK008VH4TP’s threshold voltage, the device is turned on and will divert the current through the MT1 and MT2 cathodes. When the gate voltage falls below the threshold voltage, the device is turned off and the current remains off. This behaviour is commonly termed as bidirectional bistable switching, making the QK008VH4TP ideal forbidirectional applications.
