Diodes are electronic components that conduct current that flows in one direction only, and provide no conduction in the reverse direction. In a pulsed-mode, the gate voltage of the diode is alternated between negative and positive values, causing the diode to switch on and off at short intervals of time. This switching behaviour allows for the diode to control the switch-on/switch-off of a circuit in a very short time. In short, the RC2 diode is designed to be especially suitable for applications used to control power in rectification circuits and variable devices.
The main advantages of using RC2 diodes in rectification and variable devices is their high speed. This is due to the low ON-resistance when compared to conventional SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) rectifiers. In addition, RC2 diodes can be operated in temperatures from -55C to 175C, which makes them very suitable for automotive and aerospace applications.
The typical working current for RC2 diodes is from 10A to 30A, and the forward voltage drop is from 1.2V to 1.5V. This makes them ideal for high power applications, where current is required to be switched in a very short time.
