Its low forward voltage drop means it is a highly efficient component for rectifying power, resulting in less wasted energy. Furthermore, it does not have any moving parts and requires minimal maintenance when in use.

In spite of its numerous advantages, the single diode rectifier is not suitable for all applications. Its rectifying action limits the amount of power that can be rectified, resulting in an output of small voltage levels and low power gain. Furthermore, the diode has a relatively high reverse voltage component, which means it is not suitable for applications where absolute DC output is necessary.
