Single rectifier field effect transistors (SRFBLs) are specialized types of field effect transistors (FETs) used in high-frequency, high-temperature applications such as switchmode power supplies, motor control, and other similar applications. Operating as a three-terminal device, an SRFBL functions like a standard MOSFET, allowing for excellent frequency response and power handling capabilities. The most common application for an SRFBL is as a switching device operating in an on-off fashion, with the gate (G) controlling the flow of current between the source (S) and the drain (D). SRFBLs can be manufactured using silicon, gallium arsenide, or III-V materials.
An SRFBL is essentially a MOSFET with a four-terminal structure. The fourth terminal, called the rectifier field, is connected to a protectant negative voltage. When the gate voltage is applied to the SRFBL, an electric field is generated that allows the electrons to pass through the semiconductor material in a controlled manner. In effect, the SRFBL doubles as a rectifier, providing a very fast response times. This feature allows SRFBLs to be used in a variety of fast-switching power applications.
At the most basic level, an SRFBL operates in two stages: unit resistance operation and the rectifier field operation. During the unity resistance stage, the voltage at the gate will control the current flow between the drain and the source. When the SRFBL is in rectifier field operation, the gate voltage is maintained at a constant level and the rectifier field is applied. This causes the electrons to flow in only one direction, creating a rectifying effect.
Because of their excellent speed and power handling capabilities, SRFBLs are commonly used in applications such as power supplies, motor control, voltage regulation, and battery charging. SRFBLs have become popular in the automotive industry due to their ability to provide fast and efficient power delivery in a very small package. In addition, they can be used in applications that require high-frequency, high-temperature operation. In particular, SRFBLs have been widely used in the manufacturing of electronic power inverters and power conditioning systems, as well as in communications and server applications.
