The RT8463GQW is a multi-function LED driver IC released by Richtek Technology Corporation. The device processes high-bright LED applications and can adjust LED currents using PWM dimming. It is particularly targeted at dimmable backlighting applications used in LCD display monitor and commercial lighting.

The RT8463GQW includes a high-efficiency linear boost regulator, a high-efficiency Power Save Mode (PSM) sequential boost regulator, a low-dropout linear regulator, and an analog dimming circuit. It has built-in over-current protection, thermal-shutdown protection, and dimming control. The driver is optimized for high current, low noise, and wide dimming range.

In terms of working principle, the RT8463GQW works by controlling the LED current by adjusting both the DCM boost frequency and the equivalent linear regulator output current. In the PSM Mode, the chip uses the DCM boost converter to periodically switch the inductor current with a low duty PWM cycle. During the PWM “on time”, the energy stored in the inductor is delivered to the LED string. The PWM frequency can adjust and keep the LED voltage out of the LDO regulated voltage and reduce power consumption during the PWM “off time”.

The RT8463GQW is designed to provide a cost-effective solution to LED backlighting with high efficiency. It is especially suitable for applications where dimming, low power consumption and wide dimming range are needed. The device can also be used in other lighting applications, including home appliance lighting and automobile lighting.
