The RT8859AGQW is a special purpose, 3-phase synchronous buck converter from Richtek. This device combines the features of both a synchronous buck regulator and a phase shift controller. It includes an integrated, high-efficiency, 3-phase PWM controller, voltage reference, current sensing amplifier, gate drivers and a high-side and low-side MOSFET driver. The RT8859AGQW can be used for power supplies such as AC-DC single output, benchtop and/or ATX μATX/Mini-ITX type power supplies. It is an ideal solution for multiple logical power rail designs in processors, graphics chips, FPGAs, and ASICs.
The RT8859AGQW operates in the 3.3V ~ 5.5V input voltage range, and is compatible with Power-Good signals, over voltage protections (OVP) and more. The RT8859AGQW provides multiple output voltage options that range from 0.8V to 1.5V and are programmable via external resistors or external DAC settings. The device integrates current detection feedback, voltage reference and other crucial components which allows a high power conversion efficiency up to 95%. It also includes a fully-integrated digital soft-start. The RT8859AGQW is capable of delivering up to 6A peak current for its active startup control and a continuous current of 2A.
The RT8859AGQW is suitable for applications such as personal computers, servers, digital home appliance adapters, medical equipments, industrial automation systems, solar and DC power supply systems. Other applications include devices that require high system power to reduce cost and board space, such as devices needed to drive big LCD panels, drives and motors. The high efficiency power management design of the RT8859AGQW allows the reduction of wasted power and the elimination of the need for external power management chips.
The RT8859AGQW works on the principle of synchronous buck conversion. When the device is used as a buck converter, it operates in a step-down manner, where its input voltage is greater than its output voltage. The basic buck converter topology consists of a MOSFET switch, an inductor, a diode and a capacitor, which form a series resonant circuit. The device uses high-side MOSFETs to regulate the DC output voltage from the top of the converter. When the switching mode is enabled, the high-side MOSFETs are opened and closed at a switching frequency determined by the control circuit. This creates a variable voltage across the inductor that is then used to regulate the output voltage.
In a high current application such as the RT8859AGQW, the high output current requires high Switching FETs and a high inductor current. To reduce the torque ripple and output voltage ripple, the RT8859AGQW uses a 3-phase synchronous buck converter which works by dividing the inductor current into three sections. Each section is then regulated by a separate high-side MOSFET and a low-side MOSFET. The 3-phase synchronous buck converter is also advantageous as it greatly reduces switching losses and allows for better power conversion efficiency. The phase-shift controller in the RT8859AGQW is used to create phase delay between the switch signals, reducing the dissipation of power MOSFETs and improving efficiency.
Overall, the RT8859AGQW is a high power, high efficiency voltage regulator specifically designed for high current applications such as personal computers and servers. It is a 3-phase synchronous buck converter that features integrated components including a high-efficiency PWM controller, voltage reference, current sensing amplifier, and gate drivers. The efficiency of the RT8859AGQW is further enhanced by its phase-shift controller, which reduces switching losses and allows for better power conversion. With its wide range of features and high power conversion efficiency, the RT8859AGQW is an ideal solution for multiple logical power rail designs in processors, graphics chips, FPGAs, and ASICs.
