PTC Resettable Fuses, or Polymer Thermal Cutoffs, are a type of over temperature protection device that provides protection against overload and unintentional thermal runaway situations. RXE025 is a commonly used and preferred PTC Resettable Fuse, and its applications and working principle will be discussed in this article.
RXE025 is a low-profile, two-leaded, polymeric semiconductor fuse. It helps to reduce energy loss, system size and cost when compared to other types of resettable fuses. The fuse is encapsulated in a UL approved PBT or PPS housing which allows the device to be operational in high temperature environment ranging from -40 to +120°C.
RXE025 provides fast response time up to 50μs for current spike and its endurable overcurrent capability is 20 times of the rated current. The device also supports reverse current protection with up to 20 times the rated current. The longest time-to-trip of the device is 90s, and it will reset within 3 minutes at room temperature. Moreover, its resistance thermal rating of around 0.1Ω helps to minimize energy and power loss, resulting in a very high energy efficient design.
In terms of applications, RXE025 can be used as a circuit protection in newly designed products, to provide protection up-gradation in existing systems, and in legacy products where the device is being replaced due to elderly or outdated components. It generally finds its use in rectifiers,telecom equipment, regulatory-compliant electronics, consumer electronics, and unmanned aerial vehicles.
RXE025\'s working principle rests upon the threshold temperature activation of the PTC Resettable Fuse. It relies on an integrated thermistor element to sense oversized or excessive current. Below a certain threshold current, the thermistor elements remain in the low resistance states and act as a conducive bridge between the electrical connections. When the current crosses a certain threshold, the thermistor\'s resistance increases drastically, effectively inhibiting any further flow of current. This instantaneously cuts off the current flow, thus providing superior protection from overheating and voltage drops. Once the current flow stops, the heat generated by the thermistor starts to dissipate and it returns to its initial low resistance state, resuming its conductive properties.
