Introduction to PTC Resettable Fuses

PTC (positive temperature coefficient) resettable fuses are an important component in electronic circuits, often designed to protect circuits from short-circuiting or runaway temperature conditions. With an ability to accurately limit the current passing through a protected circuit by utilizing a thermally-activated element, PTC resettable fuses are used in a variety of applications. Types of PTC Resettable Fuses

On the other hand, single-polarity resettable fuses, also known as RC Series, are mainly used for direct current (DC) as they allow DC through during normal operations, but block any sudden spikes of current.

RXE040 Application Field and Working Principle

The RXE040 is a single-polarity PTC resettable fuse from the popular RGE series. With a voltage rating of 250V and a current rating of 0.4A, this resettable fuse is mainly used to protect electronic circuits from either voltage surges or short-circuits caused by either accidental or faulted sources. During normal operations, the RXE040 will pass through DC current up to 0.4A, and if the current exceeds the rated level, the fuse will “trip”, limiting the current flowing through the protected circuits.The working principle of the RXE040 is based on the inherent characteristics of a PTC thermistor. When the initial break-point is exceeded, the RXE040 enters the “tripped” state and suppresses circuit. Meanwhile, the temperature of the element will keeps increasing as current is constantly limited. Once the temperature of the RXE040 goes beyond the specified reset-point, the fuse will “reset” and bringing the protected circuits into their normal operation. Therefore, the primary advantage of the RXE040 is to provide an automatic reset feature when the over-current or short circuit is removed.
