PTC Resettable Fuses

A PTC Resettable Fuse is a device that provides over current protection and automatically resets itself after the fault has been removed. It acts as an electronic fuse which can act as a sensor or circuit protector. One common use of PTCs is to replace mechanical fuses in automotive circuit protection applications.

The RXE075 application field and working principle of a PTC Resettable Fuse is based on its ability to detect an over current event and then turn itself off. The fuse contains two parts: a sensing or sensing/actuating element and a control circuit or protective element. The sensing element is a resistor, thermistor or an varistor and is usually formed from polymeric material. The control circuitry is connected in parallel with the sensing element and consist of a power MOSFET, Zener diode and protection circuits.

When the sensing element detects the over current event, the control circuitry will activate the MOSFET which will then draw the current away from the load and shut down the circuit. The Zener diode will ensure that the control circuitry will be shut down as well. The protection circuits will then try to reset the circuit after the over current event has been removed. If the event was a short circuit, then the PTC will remain shut down until the fault has been cleared.

PTC Resettable Fuses offer many advantages over mechanical fuses. They are much smaller and lighter than mechanical fuses, making them much easier to install and maintain. They are also much safer as they shut down quickly and accurately in the event of an overload. Moreover, they can detect more complex over current events than mechanical fuses.

Most of the PTC Resettable Fuses are available in a wide range of operating ranges and current ratings. They are typically available in ratings from 10A to 60A. The maximum current rating of the fuse can often be adjusted to meet specific application requirements.
