Thyristors - SCRs

The S2006LS2 is a preferred silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) module supplied by Semikron. It is suitable for PFCs, RF heating and motor control applications, thanks to its excellent thermal switching characteristics. The wide conditions of SCRs have allowed manufacturers to increase their efficiency and the applications for which it can be used for a wide range of current and power requirements. The main component of an SCR is the silicon control rectifier. This component simultaneously acts as both a power switch and a bridge rectifier providing both current and voltage control. In an SCR, bias current is created between its anode and cathode and then used to trigger the SCR when a voltage is applied between the gate and cathode. When a signal is applied between the gate and cathode of an SCR, the resulting current flow enters the gate and activates the SCR. Once the SCR is activated, it acts as a switch that can be used to control the flow of energy.The S2006LS2 offers excellent thermal switching characteristics with its forward voltage drop at low values and excellent current carrying capability. It has a nominal current capacity of 2.6A peak, a 80°C/W junction-to-case thermal resistance and a 530V peak off-state voltage. This makes it an ideal candidate for applications such as PFCs, RF heating and motor control. Additionally, its reverse voltage tolerance (12V) and conduction current of 110mA make it even more suitable for these applications. The S2006LS2 is a 3-phase high voltage thyristor module, with each phase containing three series connected thyristors and a reverse conducting fast return diode. The thyristors are packaged in an insulated plastic sealed package with 6 lead terminals. The modules are connected to the necessary components via a 2-wire or 3-wire connection system. The connection of the thyristors are configured in a common cathode configuration, with the cathode of each thyristor being directly connected to the corresponding gate. The gate terminals of the modules are connected to an external power supply, which activates the SCRs.The S2006LS2 module operates in the reverse blocking mode, where the thyristors are reverse biased at start up and the reverse current that flows from the cathode to the gate is limited. As soon as the external control signal is applied to the gate of the thyristor, the thyristor switches to forward blocked mode and the main current flow starts. The current flow decreases with the decrease of the gate voltage end the SCR switches off when the gate current is below the holding current.In summary, the S2006LS2 is an excellent SCR module with impressive thermal characteristics and current carrying capability. Its strong rated current capabilities, reverse voltage tolerance and conduction current make it an excellent choice for motor control and PFCs. It is ideal for applications such as RF heating, where it can provide efficient and reliable operation.
