A Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diode is a form of semiconductor diode designed to protect electrical equipment from voltage transients. When subjected to higher than normal voltage, they quickly conduct current, limiting the rise of volta ge on the system. This helps to protect sensitive electronics from potentially damaging voltage changes.

The SA10A-T is a unidirectional diode TVS designed to provide best-in-class protection for sensitive components against up to 1.1kV transient surge voltage. It is constructed using a unique Zener diode process with a patented punch-through voltage adjustment technology. This allows the TVS to be optimally matched to the component’s voltage rating in order to provide the best protection. This diode is designed for extremely low capacitance which reduces power losses due to its very low insertion capacitance (Cd) of 0.12pF. The SA10A-T is ideal for high-speed applications such as USB 2.0, RS232, Ethernet, and audio-video switching applications.

Application

The SA10A-T unidirectional TVS diode is most commonly used in applications such as peripheral interface adapters, desktop computers, DVD players, automotive audio systems, and automotive infotainment systems. It is commonly employed to protect these systems from transient surges and is especially suitable for mobile applications. Due to its small size, the SA10A-T is ideal for portable electronic devices such as notebooks, tablets, PADs, MP4 players, and mobile phones. The SA10A-T is also ideal for high-speed USB and network communications.

Working Principle

The working principle of the SA10A-T unidirectional diode TVS is simple but efficient. This device functions as a “clamp” and serves to limit the maximum value of the voltage passing through it. When the voltage exceeds the reverse breakdown voltage of the diode, current will suddenly flow and the voltage will be “clamped” at the breakdown voltage. This will help to protect the components that follow from further voltage increases.

The SA10A-T also features built-in surge protection circuitry which will increase the current conducting capacity. The surge protection circuitry will reduce the transient voltage and provide better fidelity of the system.
