TVS-Diodes encompass devices which are used to protect sensitive devices in circuits from damage due to transient high voltage or current. These devices often take form of an arrangement of two back-to-back Zener diodes. The SA130 is a notable device that provides protection for circuits against transient voltage or current from impulse and surge voltage. It is especially designed for the protection of automotive ECU\'s in engine compartments, which are continuously exposed to environmental conditions such as lightning, negative transients, and electrostatic discharge. The SA130 works on the principle of suppression of transient voltage surge. In its job of providing protection for circuits, it works by clamping excessive voltage surges above a certain level. This helps to protect the sensitive elements from high transients that may cause it to suffer irreversible damages. The device comprises of an anode and a cathode connection that are connected to a back-to-back Zener diode arrangement. The connection of anode and cathode with the Zener diode is made upon application of voltage to the anode and cathode. The Zener diode arrangement breaks down when a surge voltage or current exceeds the breakdown voltage of the diode, causing an avalanche to flow by current limiting. The avalanche forward current then begins to contract upon sufficient reverse voltage bias. This cause a clamping voltage to be formed over the two connections of the diode which is clamping the surge voltage. This helps to save the sensitive devices from the damage caused due to excessive transient surges. When the surge voltage stops, the diode will return to its normal protection state. This allows the device to withstand multiple transient onsets in an application when it is used in in buck-boost converters, DC-AC converters, and EMI filters. The SA130 can also be used in conjunction with inductors to provide even better surge protection. The combination of the device with an inductor helps to reduce the impedance when the voltage or current passes through the SMD component. This helps to reduce the effect that is observed due to voltage or current steps and rang. In conclusion, the SA130 is an important device that helps to provide surge protection to several parts of electronic equipment. The use different devices and components with the diode helps to provide even better protection for sensitive parts in circuits.
