SA13AG TVS diodes are designed specifically to protect sensitive electronic components and circuits. They provide surge protection against spikes in voltages, transients, and other overvoltages.

TVS diodes control voltage and provide protection against overvoltages by using a reverse blocking diode mechanism. When exposed to a high voltage surge, the breakdown voltage of the diode will protect against the overvoltage. This reverse breakdown voltage is determined by the breakdown voltage of the device and is usually specific to the type of diode.

To increase the protection level of the diode further, zener diode structures are typically used. A zener diode is a PN junction diode which has a heavily doped PN junction. This junction has a certain reverse breakdown voltage which causes current to flow through the anode to the cathode when the voltage reaches the reverse breakdown voltage. This current is limited to a specific level and passes through the PN junction without causing a breakdown of the diode.

In most cases, SA13AG TVS diodes are used in combination with a power semiconductor such as a Metal-Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET) and a precision resistor. The combination of the three components provides ESD protection which prevents voltage from exceeding the reverse voltage breakdown of the diode when an ESD shock occurs.

In addition to providing surge protection from spikes in voltage, SA13AG TVS diodes also provide EMI noise reduction by setting a low level voltage for the circuit. The device will reduce EMI noise from entering the circuit by passing a low voltage through the diode that is low enough so that the diode will not break down. This is done by selecting a specific voltage that is just below the reverse breakdown voltage of the diode.
