TVS - Diodes (transient voltage suppressors) are voltage-clamping devices that protect circuit components from high peak voltages. The SA14HE3/54 is a single bidirectional low-capacitance transient voltage suppressor diode, designed specifically for ESD protection of signal, data, and bus lines. It is designed to protect sensitive components from voltage spikes, electromagnetic radiation, and static discharge.

Application Field

The SA14HE3/54 is commonly used for communication lines, data lines and high-speed signal line protection. It offers superior performance in handling surge induced by ESD which is needed for low-power I/O circuit boards and consumer electronics applications, such as in hard drives, motherboards, portable audio players, cell phones, and game consoles. In addition, it is also suitable for voltage clamping of transients caused by AC power system glitches, load switching and switching of inductive loads.

Working Principle

The SA14HE3/54 consists of two PN junctions that are able to conduct in either direction, unidirectionally. It operates by allowing a single temporary forward current pulse to pass through during its operation. When the applied peak voltage is greater than the maximum peak voltage (V PP ), the diode starts clamping at this voltage level. During the clamping procedure, the diode will generate a higher reverse breakdown voltage (V BR ) which is proportional to the magnitude of the applied voltage pulse. As soon as the pulse dissipates, the diode will conduct current only in the forward direction.

The SA14HE3/54 features a low capacitance, meaning that it is capable of handling high speed transients and reduces the noise level of the signal passing through it. It also has an extremely low reverse leakage current, which helps in providing a low-resistance connection for the low-power devices. Furthermore, it also has a low forward voltage drop (V F ) across its two PN junctions, which results in a low power dissipation, and no thermal runaway conditions.

The SA14HE3/54 is capable of providing ESD protection up to ±30kV (human body model). It also has a high peak pulse power rating, allowing it to dissipate much more power than other transient voltage suppressors.
