TVS - Diodes (transient voltage suppression diodes) are used for protecting electrical and electronic devices from high voltage transients that generally occur in power systems. In particular, one of the most commonly used type of transient voltage suppression (TVS) device is the SA26ARLG diode. The SA26ARLG is composed of a MOS Thyristor technology, with features included such as fast response, high peak pulse current, low capacitance and low working voltage.
The major application field of the SA26ARLG diode consists of ESD protection, transient voltage protection and electrostatic discharge protection. ESD protection means protection from ElectroStatic Discharge, which is an electrical phenomenon caused when two different materials come in contact and exchange charges quickly. The SA26ARLG is often used in this application because it is capable of rapidly changing its impedance in order to clamp any high voltage transients or spikes present in the circuit.
As for its working principle, the SA26ARLG diode consists of three different layers: a gate, a source and a drain. When the voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage, the MOSFET transistor in the device is triggered, which switches the device to a low impedance state, reducing its impedance in order to absorb the transient and dissipate the energy. It should be noted that, while the SA26ARLG can dissipate energy up to a certain point, it will eventually become saturated, and further protection must be employed in such cases.
