SA26C application field and working principle

The SA26C is a tiny, low capacitance TVS-diode that is designed to protect sensitive electronics from the potentially damaging effects of Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). This protection diode provides an immunity for portable and stationary electronics and electrical components against the adverse impact of lightning and transient voltage surges. The working principle of the diode relies on its ability to provide reliable and fast protection to protect a range of sensitive electronic equipment from the risks of voltage over or under shoot, Short-circuit, Electric Induction, Electrostatic Discharge, and Post-strike Surge.In general, to achieve a robust ESD protection, all the connections of the sensitive electronic components must be connected to ground. This makes the ground a safe and isolated environment with the aim of avoiding any type of parasitic current or voltage from interfering within the circuit.The SA26C diode is based on a p-n junction and as such operates by allowing electrical current to flow unrestricted in one direction and blocking conduction to flow in the opposite direction. In terms of ESD protection, the diode works by providing a low capacitance and fast circuit clamping response to protect the connected electronics from transient voltages.The remarkable success of the SA26C TVS diode started with its introduction in the automotive industry back in 2002. At the time, the then new SAE J1455 standard required that all automotive parts had some form of surge protection embedded into them.
