SA26CA B0G application field and working principle

TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes are a type of voltage-sensitive, one way devices, used to protect sensitive electronic circuits from excessively high surge voltages.They are commonly used in automobile, telecommunications, medical and industrial fields.

The SA26CA B0G TVS diode is typically used to protect lines from lightning-induced surge overloads in outdoor Ethernet applications. It has a flow rating of up to 100A and a 12/24V operating voltage range. The device also has an IEC61000-4-5 transient overvoltage protection up to 6kV peak pulse voltage.

The SA26CA-B0G is a low-capacitance, silicon-based diode, and has a very low clamping voltage to ensure the damping of high-voltage levels. The device operates based on the avalanche breakdown principle, where a very high electric field is generated by a decrease in the insulation resistance and a corresponding increase in the voltage applied across the TVS diode. The avalanche breakdown produces energetic electrons which cross the diode junction, creating a low resistance path capable of carrying high overvoltage current pulses.

The overall goal is to provide protection against transient voltage spikes, such as those caused by lightning, while avoiding the additional cost and system performance degradation caused by the presence of additional transient filtering components. In order to do this, the device must have a low voltage clamping level, low capacitance and low leakage current.
