SA30A B0G is a type of Transient Voltage Suppressor or TVS diode which is employed for providing bidirectional transient protection to vulnerable electronic and electrical systems. The term B0G stands for Bi-directional Over-voltage Guard and it prevents not only the transient over-voltage, but also the DC-level over-voltage. The TVS diodes use the principle of avalanche breakdown to prevent potentially damaging surges from entering the system. This is the mechanism of operation of the SA30A B0G.
A normal diode has a Voltage Breakdown or breakover voltage which is basically the voltage at which it starts to conduct current through the diode. The Voltage Breakdown of a standard diode is fixed and doesn\'t change with the amount of current passing through it. However, in the case of a TVS diode, the Voltage Breakdown is not fixed and is based on the amount of current passing through it. This is known as the Avalanche Breakdown mechanism.
The Avalanche Breakdown is basically the mechanism by which a diode is able to conduct a large current even without having a high voltage applied to it. The current passing through the diode causes the electrons to collide and gain kinetic energy due to which they end up breaking the covalent bonds between the atoms, and thus, creating more free electrons and allowing a large current to pass through. This mechanism is particularly helpful in the case of a TVS diode, as it allows it to sense a surge in voltage and start conducting current long before the standard diode would start conducting.
The Avalanche breakdown occurs in a TVS diode when a certain threshold electrical potential is reached, usually ranging from 6V-15V. When the voltage reaches or exceeds this threshold, the electrons gain sufficient energy to start breaking the covalent bonds and thus releasing more electrons into the system. As the current increases, more and more electrons become free and their number increases exponentially, and thus, causing a rapid rise in the current passing through the diode. This mechanism allows the diode to effectively dissipate the surge and protect the system from damage due to it.
The SA30A B0G is a unidirectional TVS diode, meaning that it only provides protection against surges in a single direction. It is employed in circuits that are vulnerable to single-direction surges, such as automotive and consumer electronic systems. The diode has a reverse breakdown voltage of 11V-34V and a maximum Continuous Working Voltage or CWV of 7V.
The Working Principles of the SA30A B0G TVS diode are relatively simple. When a surge of higher than 11V-34V is applied, the diode starts conducting current. This causes the current to rise exponentially and the surge is dissipated quickly, thus providing protection to the system. This diode also provides protection against any DC-level over-voltage.
