Transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diodes, also known as Transient Voltage Suppressor or surge suppressor diodes, are an important type of protection for any system that deals with transient voltage spikes. They can either be installed on a PCB or used in the form of discrete components. The most common type of Transient Voltage Suppressor Diode is the SA30A R0G. The SA30A is a general purpose low-capacitance TVS Diode for ESD and lightning protection.

The SA30A R0G is a bi-directional 600W peak pulse power zener TVS Diode. It offers ultra-low capacitance for high-speed data line application and ultra-low clamping voltage for ESD protection. It provides excellent protection against transients such as lightning, electrostatic discharge, inductive kickback, and surges. It is capable of suppressing spikes up to 27A peak and can be operated up to +85°C. It is compliant with MIL-STD-202F, IEC 61000-4-2 (ESD), and IEC 61000-4-4 (Lightning).

The SA30A R0G has two primary application fields - ESD protection and Lightning protection. For ESD protection, the device helps to protect electronic components or systems from unexpected voltage induced by ESD, as well as from induced by-products such as high-frequency noise and parasitic capacitances. This device is designed to clamp the ESD voltage to an acceptable level, thus preventing damage to the connected components. Next, the SA30A R0G can be used for Lightning protection. It provides surge protection against the short-duration high-energy pulses that can occur due to lightning strikes, especially near high-voltage powerlines. It helps to prevent system faults caused by electrical transients.

The working principle of the SA30A R0G is based on a typical TVS Diode structure - a silicon-controlled diode (SCD). During the switching, a sintered anode is connected with a semiconductor region, where the SCD acts as a two-terminal controlled switch. During ESD and transient surges, the SCD feels an electric field and starts to conduct current. If the transient suppression voltage is exceeded, the silicon diode starts to clamp the voltage. When the transient surge passes, the diode is then reset to its initial state. The peak current capability of the diode is added by the implementation of a two-terminal anode structure.

To ensure the best performance of the diode, it is important to note a few points on the PCB layout. The two anodes should be separated enough to avoid breakdown. The current should also be kept within the max load capacity, as excessive current can damage the diode and may cause a malfunction. The correct voltage should also be used, as using higher or lower voltages than specified in the datasheet may lead to unexpected results. Proper ground connections should also be made to avoid oscillations.
