TVS diodes are one type of special diode that is designed to protect other components from electrical surge and spikes. SA30A-T belongs to the TVS diode series and is specifically designed for transient voltage applications. The SA30A-T is designed with a low capacitance and a fast response time. It is available in three different packages: DO-15, SMD package and chip package. The diode has a breakdown voltage of 30V and a minimum clamping voltage of 14V. It is designed to withstand a 10A peak surge current. The total tolerance of the SA30A-T is rated at ±30%.
The working principle of the SA30A-T is based on the principle of avalanche breakdown. The diode has an intrinsic region which is an electric field generated between two P-type and N-type semiconductors. Under normal operating conditions, the electric field is kept under control and the diode remains in its non-conductive state. However, when a transient or surge voltage is applied, the electric field in the intrinsic region suddenly increases and exceeds the breakdown voltage. When this occurs, the diode become conductive and starts to clamp the surge voltage by redirecting the surge current to the ground, thereby protecting the other electronic components from electrical damage or malfunction.
The SA30A-T is a specific example of TVS diode that provides transient voltage protection by clamping the surge current.
