SA58A is a kind of transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode, which is used for protecting electronic circuits from high voltage transients. The main use of SA58A is to limit the maximum peak voltage, current and duration of overvoltage transient pulses applied to an electronic circuit. By doing this, the damage from Electrical Overstress (EOS) can be reduced to a great extent.

Typically, a TVS diode is placed between a sensitive electronic component and the external power source. It is designed to act as an uncontrolled short circuit when an overvoltage transient is applied. It is usually connected in parallel (current version) with the sensitive component or the power supply.
