SAMI-3N is a type of external active filter module made up of a main plate and multiple peripheral boards. It maintains an entire power transmission system with the benefit of best harmonic performance. As control devices, they can eliminate triplen harmonics generated by non-linear loads and the AC current and Voltage harmonics generated by variable-speed drives. SAMI-3N typically operates from zero to three-line system voltage up to 700 Volt. Its capacity can range from 50kVA to 1.25MVA and its setup is relatively flat and optimized to make it easier for operators to use. It is compatible with the data communication protocol IEC 61850.

As an active external filter system, SAMI-3N works by recognizing the harmonic source in an AC power system and responding with an appropriate low pass filter. This filter rejects the high-frequency harmonics while allowing the fundamental frequency or the power frequency of the system to pass through. As a result, the harmonics are reduced and the whole system reaches an improved power factor, higher level of total harmonic distortion (THDv) and fewer power losses.

The SAMI-3N external filter contains a shunt active filter module which is connected to the system internals via a neutral line. The module continually adjusts the output currents sent back to the system in order to nullify the harmonics currents generated by the nonlinear loads. In order to achieve this, each module contains a number of power semiconductor groups (IGBTs). These IGBTs respond to the demand for harmonic elimination by producing injection currents into the system. The increased load reactive power is compensated by a transformer which is also installed inside the module. This transformer reduces the current level during the harmonic reduction process. An associated capacitor bank, formed by one or several capacitor groups, is used to inject the active power into the system.

A controller is used to coordinate all the modules and to communicate with the system internals. It scans the whole system and drives the switched capacitors and the IGBTs accordingly. As a result, the filtered current is transmitted back to the system resulting in better power quality and improved system environment.
