Pressure sensors, transducers, and other pressure measuring devices are common in electronic device applications. The sensor itself captures the pressure and provides a signal representative of the pressure, however, that signal must be transmitted through an intricate system of electronic circuits in order to accurately measure and interpret the pressure. The Sensortec SDP1000-L, is a miniature pressure transducer suitable for use in a variety of low-pressure applications. The sensing system of Sensortec SDP1000-L consists of a MEMS pressure transducer and a signal-conditioning ASIC located on a single PCB. The pressure transducer is a semiconductor structure of silicon and micro-machined membranes that receive the pressure to be measured. The ASIC works as an analog-to-digital converter, providing an amplified output signal proportional to the applied pressure. The differential signal is amplified with an error, which is corrected linearly using an in-built temperature compensation circuit. On-chip test and calibration circuits allow for direct measurement, calibration, and control of the pressure range and offset. The output of the SDP1000-L uses a 4-20mA current-sourcing output, meaning that a positive voltage is required for its operation.
The pressure range offered by the SDP1000-L is 0 to 100mbar (1bar = 1x105 Pa). Due to its miniature dimensions and weight, the sensor can be easily integrated into pressure measuring systems which require a small size and low-pressure capability. The SDP1000-L is well suited for monitoring vacuum and leak detection, laboratory analysis, industrial process control, instrumentation, and medical applications. The operation of the sensor begins when an input pressure is applied across the diaphragm membrane of the MEMS pressure transducer. This deflection causes a change in resistance which is amplified by the ASIC and converted into a digital output. The signal is then passed through a temperature compensated linearization circuit, ensuring that the response is accurate and repeatable across the entire range of temperatures. Finally, the amplified signal is passed through a filter to remove background noise and output a 4-20mA current-sourcing signal.
