Aluminum electrolytic capacitors (also called electrolytic capacitors or simply electrolytics) are polarized capacitors which use an electrolyte to achieve a larger capacitance than what would be obtained with a dielectric in a non-polarized design. These capacitors consist of two electrodes that are separated by an electrolyte. One electrode, known as the anode, is made from aluminum, and the other electrode is known as the cathode and is formed from a layer of aluminum oxide. Currently, the most common type of electrolytic capacitor is the aluminum electrolytic capacitor due to its low cost, high capacitance and long lifetime.
