SET031011, also known as Varistor (Metal Oxide Varistor, MOV), is a type of three-terminal semiconductor components used in electronic engineering. It is available in various sizes and forms, the common being the disc-directional MOV that consists of a disc-shaped MOV encased in an epoxy resin, an aluminum case and three electrical connectors. The SET031011 can suppress high-energy transients that can damage and cause safety issues in various types of electrical and electronic equipment.

Application Field

The SET031011 can be used in a wide range of applications, such as protecting durable consumer electronics, IT equipment, telecommunications systems, motors, industrial controllers, and automotive vehicles from high-energy transients. It has greater current handling capabilities than other types of varistors and is more suitable for high power applications. Additionally, SET031011 can also be used for identifying the presence of phase in an AC electrical power line.

Working Principle

SET031011 contains zinc oxide particles, which act as a discharge resistance when a transient voltage is applied to it. When the transient voltage reaches a certain peak level, a breakdown occurs on the MOV particles and the voltage is discharged. The breakdown voltage of SET031011 varies according to the size, temperature and other physical parameters.

When a sudden surge of electricity or a transient voltage passes across the MOV, the particles expand and the charge is discharged across the MOV. As the voltage of the surge decreases, the particles contract and the gap between the sites of breakdown closes again, restoring the original charge. This cycle can occur multiple times per second, depending on the frequency of the transient voltage.

As such, when SET031011 is used in an electrical system, it can protect equipment from transients by discharging the surge of electricity quickly. This can significantly reduce the chances of permanent damage to the system.
