Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are used to prevent damage from high voltage surges caused by lightning strikes or other transient events. The SG300Q is a type of GDT designed for use in AC power line applications. It is a nonlinear device that is configured as a pair of tube assemblies, each with a series-connected discharge tube and a voltage-dependent resistor (VDR) in parallel. Function & Working Principle

This causes a spark-over breakdown of the GDT\'s main discharge tube and the resulting current causes the VDR to reduce the voltage further and the main discharge tube to extinguish or “quench” after a few microseconds. The quenching of the gas discharge tube reduces the voltage back to a safe level. To prevent any further discharges from occurring, a radiant arrester is used. The radiant arrester consists of a smaller gas discharge tube and an arc-over voltage protective resistor in series with the main discharge tube. If the voltage across its terminals is greater than the arc-over voltage of the resistor, the resistor acts to limit the current flow in such a way that no further breakdown of the gas tube will occur.
Applications
The SG300Q is designed for use in AC power line applications, such as telecommunications and service entrance rooms, to protect against transient overvoltages caused by lightning strikes or other transient events.
