The radiant arrester consists of a smaller gas discharge tube and an arc-over voltage protective resistor in series with the main discharge tube. If the voltage across its terminals is greater than the arc-over voltage of the resistor, the resistor acts to limit the current flow in such a way that no further breakdown of the gas tube will occur.
