Aluminum Electrolytic CapacitorsAluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely utilized for purpose of power supply in various electronic devices, especially in those of high power. Depending on different conditions of usage, aluminum electrolytic capacitors can be grouped into application fields and working principle.Application FieldAluminum electrolytic capacitors, also named as Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors (AECs), are broadly applied to various products such as computers, communication equipment, consuming electronics and medical appliances.For computers, AECs are installed in the power supply circuitry as start-up components, smoothing and noise filter components, peak current inrush suppressor, etc. This ensures the computing process happens without disturbance or over-energy consumption.For communications equipment, AECs are important components for matching and impedance regulations, improving signal-to-noise ratio and decreasing harmonic distortion in order to transmit message explicitly.AECs applied in consuming electronics are mainly used to start-up impulse currents, buffering inrush current, energy storage and peak current absorbing. The appliances such as TVs, speakers, refrigerators and air conditioners all require capacitors stable enough to withstand fluctuating power demands.Medical appliances are highly dependent on AECs applied in technology like elecrophysiology, electric current treatment, Stabilized direct current and medical power supplies.Working PrincipleAECs use the chemical reaction between aluminum and an ionic material like manganese dioxide, to form a highly conductive and compact film. This voltage dependent series of layers has its negative plate made of aluminum with a protective oxidation layer; while the positive plate of manganese dioxide material stays at the lower side of the oxide film. When electric current is passed through the capacitor, it causes a percentage of aluminum atoms to dislodge from its plate. This would leave empty space for ions from the electrolyte. These ions plug the hole and conduct electricity, adding another layer of protection over the layer of oxide film. This process of piling layers is what forms a highly compact film on one side of the aluminum foil, becoming a conductive plate.Also in order to reduce risk of short circuit, an insulation paper is inserted between the two conductive plates. This paper also absorbs the gases generated during chemical reaction inside and produces large volumes without a significant increase in size.The SH220M250ST aluminum electrolytic capacitor is a great example of application field and working principle.
