Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are electrical components made up of two elongated metallic plates – positive and negative – surrounded by a dielectric material and a copious amount of electrolyte – usually a liquid chemical medium such as sulfuric acid. The positive plate is made of aluminum, which is lined with an oxide layer to maintain the contact resistance, whereas the negative plate is made of paper board that is soaked in the electrolyte. The electrolyte then acts as the second plate, providing the electric charge to the capacitor.
