Oscillators

An oscillator is a system that produces periodic or regular pulses of electrical energy. Oscillators can produce frequencies from a few Hertz (cycles per second) up to hundreds of thousands of megahertz (MHz). SI50122-A3-GMR application field and working principle

SI50122-A3-GMR is a low-noise, high-performance, and low-cost PLL synthesizer. It is widely used in a variety of radio frequency applications, such as radio and television transmission; radar systems; cellular base stations; and radar navigation systems. This device provides an adjustable output frequency range from 27MHz up to 1.2GHz. It is designed for portable radio and mobile applications, and its digital PLL-based approach allows for a wide frequency range, as well as high-resolution and accuracy.

The working principle of the SI50122-A3-PLL synthesizer is as follows: the fundamental oscillator (VFO) generates a signal with a center frequency of 27MHz. This signal is then fed to a PLL output which consists of a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and a phase detector. The VCO is used to generate a stable signal with a frequency that correlates to the input frequency. The phase detector then compares the frequency of the VFO with the frequency of the VCO and provides an output voltage that is used to adjust the VCO frequency to correlate with the VFO signal. This allows the VCO to generate a signal with a specific frequency that is dependent on the VFO frequency.

The SI50122-A3-GMR synthesizer has several advantages over conventional discrete oscillators. For example, it requires less external circuitry as it incorporates the entire PLL loop internally without the need for an external filter. Additionally, its digital design allows for adjustable frequency steps, which are typically not available with analog oscillators.
