Working Principle
The SI5338A-B04361-GMR uses a phase-locked loop (PLL) to generate its clock output, which enables it to produce clean low jitter clocks. This is achieved by first locking a reference oscillator to a pre-defined frequency to generate a reference clock source. This reference clock source is then used to drive a phase detector, which in turn controls a loop filter, which then controls the voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) as feedback. By controlling the oscillator voltage, the VCO can be configured to lock to the desired frequency. By tuning the impedances in the loop filter, the loop’s closed loop gain can be adjusted, eventually resulting in the lock being achieved very quickly and accurately.
The SI5338A-B04361-GMR also features an adaptive jitter attenuation filter, which helps to reject undesired noise and jitter, and therefore provides superior clock performance in applications that require superior performance.
