Clock/Timing - Application Specific

The SI5338C-B02039-GMR is a silicon-based, 45 nm CMOS phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizer, which is used to provide clock and timing reference applications. This device integrates a dual-channel fractional-N PLL, a quasi-linear phase frequency detector (PFD), and two voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs). The SI5338C-B02039-GMR provides a wide range of frequency ranging from 10 MHz to 600 MHz, high performance jitter performance and excellent phase noise performance.

Application Field

The SI5338C-B02039-GMR is suitable for many phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesis applications, such as clock/timing generators, instrumentation/test systems and wireless applications. It is also ideal for wireless communications and radar system clock generation, as well as high-performance clock and timing reference systems.

Working Principle

The basic working principle behind the SI5338C-B02039-GMR involves the use of a phase-locked loop frequency synthesizer. A phase-locked loop is a feedback system that compares the outputs of two frequency sources, and adjusts one of the sources until the frequencies match. In the SI5338C-B02039-GMR, the two sources are a reference oscillator, which provides a stable frequency, and a VCO, which responds to the phase difference between the input and output signals. The device also features a dual-channel fractional-N PLL, which enables it to generate multiple frequency outputs with low-phase noise performance.

The SI5338C-B02039-GMR uses a quasi-linear phase detector (PFD) to compare the phase difference between the input and output signals. The PFD is responsible for producing a voltage adjustment signal that is used to tune the VCO\'s output frequency. This enables the device to generate multiple output frequencies without the need for manual switch tuning. It also features programmable low-power mode and programmable spread spectrum that can be used to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI).

The SI5338C-B02039-GMR also includes pin-selectable output enable/disable control, providing a flexible option for powering the device on and off quickly. To ensure optimum performance, the device has been designed to operate within a wide temperature range of -40°C to 85°C. The device is also available in compact 105-bump, 1 mm x 1.27 mm micro SMD packages.
