Digital isolators are essential components in various electrical and electronic systems to provide galvanic isolation between circuits. The TX circuit contains a pair of Bi-Directional MOSFETs (BSTs), a pulse transformer (PT), a Power Over Ethernet (POE) port, and a carrier sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD) control integrated circuit. The POE port allows power to be supplied to the device from an Ethernet network. The CSMA/CD control IC provides the logic to sense an ethernet collision and resolve it without losing data. The PT acts as a voltage buffer between the TX and RX circuits.

The RX circuit consists of a POE port, a pulse transformer (PT), an optocoupler, and a signal conditioning circuit. The optocoupler converts an optical signal from the POE port to an electrical signal that is then sent to the signal conditioning circuit. The signal conditioning circuit amplifies and cleans up the received signal, and sends it to a receive line.

In operation, the TX circuit receives data from a connected device or system, and converts it into a series of square pulses by way of the PT, BSTs, and CSMA/CD control IC. These signals are then sent to the RX circuit via the POE port and the PT. The RX circuit then takes this signal, converts it back into digital data via the optocoupler and the signal conditioning circuit, and sends it to the receive line. The received signal is then used as needed by the connected device or system.
