Digital Isolators employ an electrical form of isolation, rather than the opto-coupler variety used in older equipment, offering higher speed data transmission, a larger range of bandwidth, and improved safety compared to opto-couplers. SI88621EC-IS from Silicon Laboratories is a 4-channel digital isolator providing galvanic isolation of 1000Vrms between the input (non-isolated) and output (isolated) sides, for applications operating from a single 3.3V supply. The device supports:

  • Isolation of up to 1000Vrms
  • Data rates up to 28Mbps
  • Integrated power and signal ground
  • Low propagation delay (tpd = 600ns)
  • ESD protection 5kV minimum for all pins

The SI88621EC-IS uses Silicon Laboratories\' Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) technology, which allows the internal circuitry to communicate over a thin layer of supporting layers, while providing electrical isolation from the input side to the output side. The SOI layers are formed by negative channel ion implantation and PECVD technology, and are only 5nm thick, providing excellent isolation in a compact solution. The SI88621EC-IS provides ESD protection on each pin, and is rated for a minimum of 5kV contact discharge. It also has an integrated power and signal ground plane, making the design of the application simpler. The device also consumes very low power, with 125mW per channel.
