It has a maximum power output of 25W along with added linearity of +35dBm per carrier, providing extremely accurate, low distortion signals. The Doherty amplifier technology is employed in the SKY65362-11 to achieve increased power efficiency with high linearity. A conventional two-stage amplifier has a main transistor and a peaking transistor which reduce the efficiency of the amplifier by causing losses in the transistor in standby mode. The Doherty amplifier improves efficiency and linearity by incorporating a predefined phase difference between the two amplification stages and asymmetric loading. The main and peaking stages of the Doherty structure are based on two differently biased transistors which switch on and off in response to the input signal.

When the input signal to the amplifier is low the main transistor is enabled and operates in Class-A mode to ensure a low distortion signal. Above a certain input power the peaking transistor is switched on which forces the main transistor into Class-B operation. The switching mechanism which enables the peaking stage is based on the predefined phase difference and asymmetric loading characteristics of the Doherty amplifier.
